His parents had shifted to London (UK) in 1951 for work. He grew up in Eltham and went to Woolwich Polytechnic School for boys for his education. He realized his interest in acting while playing a role in school and pursued acting courses after education completion.
Education
Delroy completed his education in San Francisco where he has moved with his mother from the UK and Canada. Furthermore, he began his acting career right here. Delroy started taking theater classes at 24 at the American Conservatory Theatre.
Delroy has never been off from learning more in life. He performed as a Jamaican immigrant in 2003 for the movie Wondrous Oblivion and got interested in exploring more about such people. This was the Windrush generation that he belonged to, about whom he had heard from his mother’s account as well. Therefore, Delroy studied history further and completed his master’s from Gallatin School of New York University in 2004. He was also presented with an honor with a doctorate from Virginia Union University in Arts and Humanities.
Acting Career
For his debut movie in 1976, he portrayed the role of Sam in the Canadian film Find The Lady. Three years later, he appeared in More American Graffiti as an Army Sergeant.
Delroy then made a decision to stop acting in films and practice theater more. He got his first theater play in 1882 named Master Harold and the plays. Another play was done in 1988 and he received a Tony Nomination for this one – Joe Turner’s Come and Go.
Lindo returned to the films in 1990 and portrayed a main role in a sci-fi film Salute of the Jugger. One of his roles with Lee brought him inevitable recognition with West Indian Archie in Malcolm X. He then continued working for films and received nominations and even won some of those awards for his remarkable on-screen contribution. Some of his good works include films like Get Shorty, Soul of the Game, Glory & Honor, etc.
In 2003, Delroy dedicated a movie to his parents. This was a British film Wondrous Oblivion, where he sketched the role of a Jamaican immigrant, Dannis Samuels who moved to London in the 1950s. He remembered that his parents had also immigrated similarly during those times to London.
Then in 2007, he started his direction and produced some films. He formed an association with a theater in California and started directing with The Blue Door. He worked in some other theater plays like August Wilson’s play Come and Gone. Delroy continued working in some dramas, horror films, and even an action film Point Break. He did another film in collaboration with Lee titled The Harder They Fall in 2021.
